A new bill was introduced in the Legislature that would eliminate Idaho’s March and August school bond and levy election dates and move nonpartisan school elections into alignment with partisan elections in May and November.
The bill was introduced by first-year Rep. Joe Alfieri, who believes that the current election calendar is dishonest and wants to eliminate two of the four possible election dates.
If the bill is passed into law, school districts would only be allowed to run bond and levy elections in May or November.
Alfieri thinks that his bill will provide the benefits of increased voter turnout and lower costs since there will be fewer elections to run each year. The bill was introduced with a vote in the House State Affairs Committee and will return to the committee for a full public hearing.
