Library trustees with the Community Library Network unanimously voted yesterday to adopt a new kind of library card for minors under 18. Read Between the Lede to get the main points of the story.
- The rollout will come in stages with the expected launch to happen January 2024.
- This new card can be restricted based on the library sections: a) The children’s collection (ages 0-12), b) the teen’s section (ages 13 to 15), and c) open access to the entire collection in the library.
- While this seems like a step in the right direction with addressing citizen’s concerns about sexual/pornographic material in public libraries, it will not have any effect as these books already exist in the childrens/juvenile sections of public libraries.
- CLN will need to create a new “Teen” reading section from their children’s and adult collections.
- While it doesn’t prevent minors from thumbing through books at the library it will restrict their ability to check-out certain books.
