On Memorial Day evening, a man was injured after a shootout started at Fourth Street establishment. According to a release from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, the incident occurred after the two men had been drinking and decided to take their disagreement outside:

“On May 29, 2023 at approximately 7:50 p.m., officers with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department responded to the Corner Bar located at 1628 N 4th St for a shooting that had just occurred. On scene, officers located both males involved in the incident. The victim, later identified as Brandon Burnette, had a gunshot wound to his arm and his abdominal area. Several people on scene were already providing medical aid to Burnette and medical personnel arrived on scene a short time later. Officers detained the suspect, later identified as Cory Hippenstiel.

During the investigation, officers learned both Burnette and Hippenstiel were drinking in the bar. The two became involved in an argument and both males eventually went outside where they continued to argue and began pushing each other. At one point, Hippenstiel retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and threatened Burnette with it. As the argument continued, Hippenstiel hit Burnette in the head with the gun, then shot at Burnette two times. One of the bullets hit Burnette in the lower abdominal area, causing serious injury. After shooting Burnette, Hippenstiel put the handgun back in his truck and remained on scene.

Burnette was transported to Kootenai Health where he was treated for his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.

Coeur d’Alene Police Detectives responded to the scene to investigate. Hippenstiel was interviewed and placed under arrest. He was booked into the Kootenai County Jail for Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Battery.
