Polling data across the board shows President Donald Trump crushing Nikki Haley in the quest for the Republican nomination, and Idaho is no exception. Despite the expected Trump victory in the Idaho Republican Presidential Caucus on Saturday, March 2, 2024, the Idaho GOP Chair Dorothy Moon encourages all Republican affiliated voters to attend and participate in the formal process of selecting the party’s nominee.
As previously published, the Idaho Republican Party is conducting a caucus due to legislation that removed the presidential primary from Idaho’s election calendar. This applied to all political parties in Idaho, not just the Republican party.
Idaho voters are most familiar with a presidential primary, which is administered by the State of Idaho via the forty-four county clerk offices. Due to House Bill 138, which was passed and signed into law by Governor Brad Little during the 2023 legislative session, all political parties in Idaho had their presidential primary eliminated from the state’s election calendar. This means the election apparatus overseen by the Secretary of State’s office will not provide for the administration of a presidential primary for any of Idaho’s four recognized political parties (Republican, Democratic, Constitution, and Libertarian). The Republican party was the only political party in Idaho to make arrangements for their affiliated voters to participate in its 2024 presidential nomination process.
According to literature provided by the Idaho GOP, Republican voters will meet throughout the state to select a presidential nominee at 11:00 a.m. PST (12:00 p.m. MST) on Saturday, March 2, 2024. Postcards have been mailed to all Idaho Republican voters that show the date, time, and location of where they can cast their caucus vote. Voters must show picture identification and party officials urge voters to bring the postcard with them to their caucus location to facilitate the check-in process.
There are twenty-five caucus locations in Kootenai County and where a voter goes will depend on the precinct where they are registered to vote. A voter can verify their precinct by going to the Idaho Secretary of State website and entering the name and date of birth that matches their voter registration.
