Debunking the opposition’s misinformation about NWCCU’s site visit report.
Guest Opinion by Mike Waggoner, Chair of North Idaho College Board of Trustees
I have reviewed the preliminary findings of the accreditation teams’ most recent visit to North Idaho College. I look forward to seeing the report released. The report documents the good work of the Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty, and it provides constructive feedback. While the details of this report are currently confidential and I am bound by ethics to maintain its confidentiality until the public release, it seems there’s some misinformation being spread by liberal activists regarding the content of the document. My goal is to address these inaccuracies and provide you clarity with the facts.
Renaissance Under Conservative Leadership
Under the stewardship of a conservative-led Board, North Idaho College (NIC) has dramatically turned the tide from uncertainty to an exciting revival. Having faced potential accreditation loss and declining student numbers, NIC has now surged forward with remarkable improvements. Enrollment has increased by more than 15%, accreditation issues are being resolved with diligence, and there’s a palpable sense of revitalization on campus. NIC isn’t merely holding steady; it’s flourishing, on track to become a center for educational greatness in the region.
Conservatives Brought Positive Progress
Three years ago, North Idaho College, with almost a century of history, found itself at a junction requiring not just incremental changes but a comprehensive transformation to ensure its survival and relevance.
The tides turned with the arrival of a conservative-led Board of Trustees, including trailblazers like Greg McKenzie and Michael Barnes. They arrived just as the college was hemorrhaging students and witnessed the effects of a 12-year decline in enrollment. These trustees weren’t there to be passive passengers, they came to make fundamental constructive changes for success and redefined the college’s path to one of excellence.
Governance and Accreditation
The conservative-led Board stepped in during a time when NIC was grappling with accreditation issues. Their approach was to address the matter head-on, initiating a strategic overhaul which included updating governance policies that were decades out of date. This has led to radical improvements, clearer operational processes, and a focused direction for the college.
Enrollment Surge
One of the most telling signs of NIC’s resurgence under the conservative Board majority is the significant increase in enrollment. After years of decline, this year saw a 15 percent rise in student numbers. This growth spans across dual enrollment for high school students to career and technical education at the Parker Center in Rathdrum, demonstrating a broadening appeal and effective outreach.
Financial Health
NIC’s financial stability has also been bolstered. The college has produced $1 million budget surpluses in the last two years, and the NIC Foundation’s endowment has reached $45 million, a significant increase from two years ago, providing a solid financial foundation for future initiatives and student scholarships..
Looking Forward
NIC is now on an upward trajectory, not just in terms of numbers but in its role within the community. Programs like Head Start, elder care, and GED are thriving; showcasing NIC’s commitment to broader community engagement and education.
Vote to Make NIC Great Again
In the upcoming election, supporting candidates who align with this vision is crucial. Their election would ensure that NIC continues on this path of growth, accountability, and alignment with North Idaho conservative values.
Choosing Lyons, McKenzie, and Angiletta in this election means NIC’s future will be more than just hopeful — it’ll be secure, thanks to a conservative Board focused on making sure the college is committed to the community’s needs. NIC isn’t just getting by anymore; it’s stepping into a bright new phase, ready to boost job skills and education throughout North Idaho and usher in a time of growth and impact.
