Press Release from Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office
KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — On December 6, 2025, at approximately 7:30 p.m., deputies at the Kootenai County Jail responded to medical emergencies involving two inmates.
Jail staff quickly identified the symptoms of fentanyl overdoses and administered Narcan, reviving both individuals. As deputies moved the remaining inmates from the affected section, additional inmates began showing signs of overdose. Narcan was again administered, successfully reviving the inmates.
In total, six inmates experienced overdose symptoms. CDA Fire and Rescue responded alongside deputies and jail medical staff to provide immediate medical care. All six inmates were transported to a local hospital for treatment. After receiving hospital care, the six inmates were returned to jail.
A search of the jail uncovered trace amounts of fentanyl. Raymond D. Spezzi, 37, of Coeur d’Alene, who was among the first to be treated, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance inside a correctional facility. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
During this time, the jail asked partner law enforcement agencies to only arrest crucial offenders as staffing became critical. Maintaining proper staffing levels within the jail is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of deputies, professional staff, civilians and those in our custody. Adequate staffing allows for effective supervision, supports safe daily operations and ensures personnel are able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies within the facility.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office urges the community to be aware of the dangers posed by fentanyl, an extremely potent opioid that can cause overdose or death even in small quantities. Fentanyl is often mixed with other substances without the user’s knowledge, contributing to a rise in overdose deaths. Public awareness, naloxone access, and prevention efforts are essential in combating this growing threat.
