Idaho Eliminates License Plate Registration Stickers Under New Law

Press Release from Idaho Transportation Department

Idaho drivers will soon have one less thing to worry about when House Bill 533 officially goes into effect, eliminating the long-standing requirement for registration stickers on Idaho license plates.

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho motorists will no longer need to apply annual registration stickers to their license plates. Instead, a valid license plate and up-to-date vehicle registration will fully satisfy state traffic laws.

The state estimates the change will save approximately $300,000 annually in materials and production costs.

What Drivers Need to Know

  • No more stickers: Drivers will not receive or be required to display registration stickers after July 1, 2026.
  • Registration still required: Motorists must continue renewing their vehicle registration on schedule. Vehicles without registration will be cited by law enforcement which carries a fine of $101.
  • No action needed for existing plates: Current plates remain valid without modification.
  • Law enforcement procedures unchanged: Officers will continue verifying registration during traffic stops or routine checks.

The law’s provisions take effect July 1, 2026, giving state agencies and residents ample time to adjust to the new system.
