Annie Winston, a children’s author from Coeur d’Alene established the non-profit organization Jazzed About Reading (JAR) in 2018. The Heroic Dad’s Story Hour program, which has featured local heroic dads Ryan Bones, John Mahin, Glen Campbell, and Don Bradway, is returning for a new year of inspirational reading events. The program which previously used the city library has moved to Candlelight Christian Fellowship and is scheduled to host its first event on Saturday, January 20, 2024, from for 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The reading will take place in the main foyer where a cozy gathering around the fireplace will be a great backdrop for some wonderful stories.

JAR’s Heroic Dad’s Story Hour program:

  • provides attendees with free books, book marks, coloring sheets, and snacks.
  • reads appropriate books that are fun and inspirational.
  • features team members who are faith-filled men of God who know the power of reading a great story to a child
  • has visited dozens of schools in North Idaho to inspire a love of reading in children.
  • has given away thousands of books.

JAR’s vision going forward is to double their generosity and give away more great books, by adding additional sponsors, partners, and fun reading incentive programs. Join JAR’s team and share your love of reading with children, and ignite in them a passion for reading great books. Check out the great book list for ideas of where to start reading with children.

JAR’s founder, Annie Winston wanted to create a fun and inspiring picture book about a reading challenged penguin who would help young readers understand the value and importance of reading well for greater success in life.  Annie was thrilled to partner with Heather Martinez, Spongebob illustrator, to create Ivan Von Penguinsky.
