Press Release from Kootenai County

COEUR D’ALENE – Kootenai County invites the public to a town hall meeting about a proposed autopsy lab on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. At this event Commissioner Leslie Duncan, Prosecutor Stanley Mortensen, and Coroner Dr. Duke Johnson will educate the public on why Kootenai County is seeking to establish an autopsy lab and hire a medical examiner to serve the county’s growing needs.

Currently, the county contracts with Spokane County for autopsy services. The proposed
autopsy lab and medical examiner would be located in the Kootenai County Coroner’s Office and would be the first autopsy lab in all of North Idaho.

At this town hall you will find out:

  • Why the County needs one and how it will benefit other surrounding North Idaho counties.
  • How accreditation opened additional grant opportunities for the county.
  • The approximate cost of the autopsy lab and potential savings to the tax payer from
    revenue and grants.
  • Why we will only need two additional staff members, a medical examiner, and an autopsy
    assistant.
  • How the lab will provide a more timely and efficient service to the community.
  • The next steps and when it could open.

The public’s feedback is invaluable to this proposal. Please join us Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the County Building, 451 N. Government Way, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in rooms 1A/B.
