KCSO Deputies Deal with Drugs and Mental Health Issues

COEUR D’ALENE – According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office (KSCO), police canines alerted to the presence of drugs on multiple traffic stops this past week, leading to the discovery of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana.

The information comes from a notable calls list which was created in response to multiple requests from the public, and is scheduled to be released by KSCO on Mondays and Fridays each week.

KSCO deputies also responded to multiple mental health situations, two unattended deaths, and made arrests on active warrants.

The first unattended death was an elderly woman, who was found by her husband on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. The second was an male with multiple severe health issues, who was found by his wife on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

One of the mental health calls originated as a response to an agency assist in Post Falls with reports of a male driving recklessly and running over curbs at high rates of speed. When the deputies made contact, the driver said he was trying to hurt himself and was brought to Kootenai Health for a mental evaluation.

A residence for troubled youth was damaged when one of the youth housed there destroyed “a large amount” of property during a mental health breakdown. The female youth was reported to have threatened staff and was placed under citizen’s arrest.

Idaho §19-604 defines when a private person may arrest another: when a public offense has been committed or attempted in his presence, when a person has committed a felony, although not in his presence, and when there is reasonable cause to believe the person is responsible for a felony that has in fact taken place.
